India’s First Organic State; Sikkim
Sikkim has become India’s first fully organic state by implementing organic practices on around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land.
“We have achieved fully-organic status in the end of December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally announce this at a sustainable agriculture conference in Gangtok on January 18,” Sikkim Organic Mission’s executive director Dr Anbalagan told PTI.
He said around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land was gradually converted to certified organic land by implementing organic practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production.
It was 12 years ago in 2003 when the Pawan Chamling-led government decided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly.
Later the entry of chemical inputs for farmland was restricted and their sale banned. Farmers therefore had no option but to go organic.
Organic cultivation is free of chemical pesticides and chemical fertilisers as it tries to strike a harmonious balance with a complex series of ecosystems.
In the long term, organic farming leads in subsistence of agriculture, bio-diversity conservation and environmental protection, agriculture secretary Khorlo Bhutia said.
Sustainable farming will also help in building the soil health resulting in sustainable increased crop production, he said.
Besides it will also boost the tourism industry in the tiny landlocked Himalayan state.
Resorts have already been marketing themselves as completely organic where tourists can pluck, cook and relish fresh organic food from their kitchen gardens..

Russia to Ban Genetically Modified Organisms in Food Production

President Vladimir Putin in 2014 said measures should be taken to protect the Russian market and consumers from GMO products.
The Russian government will ban production of goods using genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich was quoted as saying Friday.
“The question is complicated, but the decision was made: We are not going to produce any food products using genetically modified organisms,” Dvorkovich said at an agricultural forum, the Prime news agency reported.
GMOs in agriculture have become a controversial issue worldwide, with several dozen nations banning their import or use. Critics of GMOs say they are potentially hazardous to human health and the environment, but many scientists oppose limits on their use, insisting GMOs have been used for years and are perfectly safe.
Russian authorities have been tightening rules against GMOs for some time. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said last year that Russia would not import GMO products, and the government approved a draft law banning GMO cultivation, except for research purposes, in early 2015, Prime reported.
Dvorkovich, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June, said that Russia would not resort to using GMOs to boost agricultural output, and that Russia has “chosen a different path” to boost crop yields, according to naturalnews.com.
President Vladimir Putin in 2014 said measures should be taken to protect the Russian market and consumers from GMO products, as their use could have unforeseen consequences, news agency RIA Novosti reported.
LONDON (Reuters) – Scotland’s devolved government said on Sunday it intended to ban the growing of genetically modified (GM) crops on its territory to protect its “clean and green brand” and because there was little evidence that Scottish consumers wanted GM products.
Widely grown in the Americas and Asia, GM crops have divided opinion in Europe, with some green groups saying they are worried about their environmental impact. They have also questioned whether they are healthy for humans. Producers say research shows the crops are safe.
Richard Lochhead, the Scottish government’s minister for the environment, food and rural affairs, said on Sunday he planned to take advantage of new European Union rules allowing countries to opt out of growing EU-authorized GM crops.
“Scotland is known around the world for our beautiful natural environment – and banning growing genetically modified crops will protect and further enhance our clean, green status,” Lochhead said in a statement.
“There is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing GM crops to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our 14 billion-pound ($22 billion) food and drink sector.”
Lochhead, a member of the Scottish National Party, said he had informed the British government, from which Scotland enjoys a large degree of autonomy, of the policy decision.
Do not Let Fine Gael sign away our Democracy!!!
Would you sign an agreement that was discussed secretly which would impact on the food you eat, working conditions, health care, education, environment etc but does not recognise our laws, courts and constitution? No? Fine Gael would!
Are you familiar with the TTIP agreement? No ? You are not supposed to until it is a done deal.
TTIP stands for Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership a so called free trade agreement between Europe and the USA.
The US has much lower standards of food production than we in Europe have. They put hormones in their beef, dip chickens in chlorine and use genetically modified crops. This agreement if passed would force us to allow the free flow of products into Europe and Irish farmers could struggle to compete as well as the potential danger to public health.
This agreement is unnecessary as trade between Europe and the US has never been better.2.5 Billion euros of goods and services every day and only 5% of goods subject to tariffs.
Now the really scary bit ISDS (Investor State Dispute Settlement). This is the Trojan horse in the agreement which allows multinational corporations to sue national governments for loss of earnings. Quebec in Canada is being sued after it voted to ban fracking. Australia is being sued by tobacco company Philip Morris over it plain Cigarette packaging. Egypt had to abandon their plans to introduce a minimum wage when Veolia the same company that is installing water meters in this country threatened to sue.
Corporate lawyers make up an ISDS tribunal which is held in secret with no appeals process. Incredibly it does not recognise our laws and so our constitution and directions from the Dail and supreme court are meaningless. Richard Bruton is lobbying hard for this agreement and even signed a letter to the EU commission for its speedy implementation.
This is not a done deal and we need to speak up against it. We are only a few months from an election. Inform politicians that you will not vote for anyone who votes for TTIP.

(NaturalNews) Israel’s Ministry of Health has made a bold ruling against artificial water fluoridation, reversing more than 15 years of forced poisoning via public water supplies in the Middle Eastern country. A recent announcement by Israel’s Supreme Court has declared that a 1974 law permitting — and a later 1998 law requiring — all public water supplies in Israel to be fluoridated are both outdated and invalid, and that all current fluoridation programs in the country will have to end by April 9, 2014, in order to comply with new public safety requirements.

“Money, as Karl Marx lamented, plays the largest part in determining the course of history. Once speculators are able to concentrate wealth into their hands they have, throughout history, emasculated government, turned the press into lap dogs and courtiers, corrupted the courts and hollowed out public institutions, including universities, to justify their looting and greed.”

A Veto on Democracy
The Party Whip: A veto on democracy:
One of the core problems of our political system at the moment is the Party Whip. We may have “some” good people within these parties but they are totally silenced & controlled by the Party Whip. We currently have a four man government dictating to the rest.
Our elected TD’s are nothing more than nodding heads, there to put their hand up when told & of course to collect their expenses.
Democracy currently does not exist in Ireland.
Democracy “needs to be managed”, says Leo Varadkar, “you need a strong party system and a strong whip system” SEPTEMBER 13, 2012
